Explosion Takes 3 Police Officers During Property Removal Operation in Northern Italy

Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and a third person who ran away subsequent to the incident was located soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
