Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior political figure stated the vandalism left him without words and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
